Urban Wheat Field Sprouts Up November 4, 2008

COLLABORATIVE efforts between the Wheat Foods Council and its members and partners have resulted in a wheat field sprouting up in New York City.
The live wheat field, approximately one-quarter of an acre in size, came up at New York City’s South Street Seaport.

According to the Wheat Foods Council, its “Urban Wheat Field Experience,” which ran Oct. 6-8, brought to life the farm-to-fork journey of America’s most-consumed grain with a wheat field, full-size combine, functioning mill, bread-baking station, nutrition lab and more.

The project provided visitors with a new way to think about wheat by busting myths arising from such things as wheat’s description as “amber waves of grain” in the song “America the Beautiful” and the nutrition-related misconceptions surrounding enriched white flour
