Favorite Young Farmer Makes the Paper May 19, 2009

Chris Chinn, former AFBF Young Farmer & Rancher chair and pork producer along with her husband, made it in the local paper today with a letter to the editor. She gives the skinny on modern hog farms.

Don’t give me free-range hogs anytime soon. A study published in the journal Foodborne Pathogens and Disease found higher rates of salmonella in free-range pigs (54 percent versus 39 percent) and also greater levels of pathogen toxoplasma (6.8 percent versus 1.1 percent) and, most alarming, two free-range pigs that carried the parasite trichina (as opposed to zero for confined pigs).

Factory farms feed families and the world. We need a blend of agriculture. Large and small. If we don’t have large family farms we can’t feed ourselves and the rest of the world. Plus, we won’t have access to affordabl,e healthy food without large farms.
