Proposed Climate Bill Is More Harm Than Good for Farms June 11, 2009

Farmers use a lot of energy, from tractor fuel to nitrogen-rich fertilizer, so any restriction on greenhouse-gas emissions is going to drive those prices up, leaving farmers “with a huge energy bill,”  said Bob Stallman.

Lawmakers need to set up “an agricultural offset program including the types of offsets that would qualify for payments,” as well as put in charge of the program the Department of Agriculture, which advocates for farmers, and not the Environmental Protection Agency.

Many farmers have already adopted practices to reduce carbon emissions from their land and they need to be rewarded.

Farm Bureau believes the proposed law would reduce farmers net income by $5 billion by the year 2020. That’s a conservative estimate, though, he said.
